October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a time to focus on strengthening our defenses against online threats. As technology evolves, so do the tactics of cybercriminals. It’s essential to be aware of the risks and to know your role in protecting yourself.

Your Role in Cybersecurity:

While Nodak's IT team works diligently to maintain our security systems, the human element remains the most critical line of defense. Phishing emails, malicious links, and social engineering scams are designed to trick and confuse us. Being vigilant is our shared responsibility.

Protecting Ourselves and Our Members:

This month is an opportunity to focus on cybersecurity practices that help protect your personal accounts. The skills and awareness you develop will help to keep your home network, personal accounts, and family safe online. By reinforcing these habits, you become an advocate for a more secure digital environment.

What You Can Do:

Throughout the month, take the time to be proactive:

  • Think Before You Click: Always be suspicious of unexpected emails, especially those asking for personal information or credentials.

  • Update Software: Updating software and devices is the easiest way to stay protected from security threats. Perform updates as soon as they become available or set automatic updates.

  • Use Strong Passwords and MFA: Use unique and complex passwords for all your accounts. When possible, add Multifactor Authentication (MFA) to provide an extra layer of security.

  • Use a Password Manager: Consider using a password manager to store and manage unique passwords for all your accounts securely.

  • Report Suspicious Activity: If something looks questionable, report it immediately.

Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility.  Staying safe online takes effort and active participation.  Informed users and an active commitment to remain vigilant will contribute to a safer cyberspace.
